The Puffy Mattress is a uniquely designed mattress created by the Puffy company. According to the company, the mattress provides universal comfort for all different kinds of sleepers and offers a cloud-like sleeping experience.
Firmness and Support
It would appear that opinions on the firmness of the mattress vary. Some people say it is not too firm and appears a decent mid-way level between firm and soft. However, it is the top layer that is soft and provides cloud-like cushioning.
The bottom 7-inch layer is what provides the firmness you want and need from a comfortable mattress. The firmness of the mattress is what helps you determine if you can sleep on your side, stomach, or back.
Currently, the Puffy Mattress allows you to sleep in all three positions rather comfortably. The top layer cushions you enough that it does not apply pressure on your hip and shoulder when you lay on your side.
If you opt to lay on your back, the firmness of the bottom mattress provides you enough lumbar support that you do not have to worry about waking up with back pain. If you are a stomach sleeper, the top layer and bottom layer work together to provide you cushioning comfort, and enough support to a restful night’s sleep.
Nothing is more frustrating than sleeping next to someone who tosses and turns throughout the night. Perhaps your spouse or partner is a restless sleeper. Maybe you have kids who often climb into your bed in the middle of the night and roll around.
It is also not uncommon for two people who sleep in the same bed to roll toward one another throughout the night. Feeling the motion of someone else moving around often interrupts your sleep, which lowers the quality of your rest.
Fortunately, the Puffy Mattress offers incredible motion isolation. The mattress does not contain any springs, which helps isolate motion. Also, the two foam layers absorb movement so you can sleep peacefully even if someone is right next to you tossing and turning.
Off-Gassing and Smell
Like any mattress you unwrap or unbox, the Puffy Mattress does have a bit of a “new” scent to it after you first open the packaging. The smell seems to linger for a couple of days, but it is not overpowering or unpleasant by any means, and there are no long-term scent concerns.
The mattress does not contain materials that commonly produce unpleasant smells. For instance, the mattress does not contain:
- Flame retardants
The company designs the mattress so it maintains freshness for as long as possible, which helps to control unwanted smells.
Construction and Material
The Puffy Mattress offers a unique construction and combination of materials meant to provide an exceedingly comfortable sleep experience. The mattress is supposed to envelope your body in softness while offering enough firmness to prevent too much sinking.
Instead, the mattress adapts to the shape of your body, thus maximizing your sleep potential. It is the top 3-inch layer of Cooling Cloud Foam that hugs your body in soft comfort, thus allowing you to enjoy a restful night’s sleep.
The top layer is a gel infused foam made of viscoelastic polyurethane. The construction of the top layer encouraged Puffy to use Variable Pressure forming Technology. The patent pending top layer is just thick enough to make you feel as though you are sleeping on soft floating clouds.
The bottom layer is yet another foam layer that is 7 inches in depth. It contains Firm Core Support technology, which is essentially foam made via Variable Pressure Foaming technology. The bottom layer of foam is made of 1.5 PCF polyurethane foam.
It is the bottom layer that offers a properly balanced measure of support and firmness for a comfortable night’s sleep. The majority of people in the U.S., whether side sleepers, back sleepers, or stomach sleepers, prefer a medium firmness level, which is what the Puffy provides.
Does it Sleep Hot or Cool?
Many people prefer to sleep cooler rather than hotter, which is generally better for you anyway. At night, your body cools naturally, reaching its lowest temperature of the day around five in the morning. Allowing your body to reach a cooler temperature can help you experience a deeper, more restful sleeping space.
As you cool, your body heat tends to transfer, perhaps to the pillow you use, or even to your mattress. Perhaps you often wake up tossing and turning because you feel the heat of your pillow or mattress. A mattress that feels heated is often an uncomfortable experience.
Fortunately, the Puffy Mattress prevents that heat transfer thanks to the top 3-inch layer of Cooling Cloud foam. The gel infused into the layer absorbs your body heat and promotes better air flow to help keep you feeling cool and comfortable throughout the night.
The breathability of the top layer means you do not feel the heat transfer as it pulls heat from your body. Instead, you feel nothing but the cool, comfortable surface beneath you. You also feel cooler overall throughout the night as the mattress pulls heat from your body to maximize the comfort of your sleep.
Public perception of the Puffy Mattress is generally favorable. Many customers have nothing but positive things to say about the mattress. It would seem that favorable opinions appreciate the comfort and firmness of the mattress.
Consumers appreciate the softness of the top 3-inch layer and the firmness of the bottom 7-inch layer. They also seem to like how easy it is to unbox the mattress and the fact that it does not come with any unpleasant smells.
In the following video, you will see firsthand what this person’s perception of the Puffy Mattress is shortly after unboxing.
In this next video, you will see an unboxing review along with hearing some helpful tips after receiving your new Puffy Mattress. Tips include how long you should wait for your mattress to fully expand and what to do while you wait for that new smell to wear off.
The Purchasing Process
From ordering to delivery to setup: The Puffy Mattress is made in the United States and sold exclusively online. When you order the mattress, you receive a free shipping option that allows you to receive your mattress in a matter of 4 to 7 days. Currently, it does not appear that there are any other shipping options available.
Your mattress arrives packaged and boxed. The mattress weighs a decent amount so you may want someone available to help you bring it inside and to the room where you plan to use it. The purchase process is relatively simple and requires just basic information pertaining to your email address, home address, and payment information.
Puffy also offers finance options for purchasing. The company charges 0% APR as long as you pay the amount of the mattress in full within 6 to 12 months using Klarna. If you wish to use the company’s financing option, choose the “Pay with Klarna” option when checking out.
Opening a Klarna Credit account is subject to approval, so it may not be the right option for everyone. Klarna Credit, which is made available by WebBank, contains various terms and conditions, so make sure you check them out before you make your decision.
Once you receive your mattress, unbox it carefully and allow it to fully expand. Full expansion of the mattress may take anywhere from 24-48 hours at maximum. Although it may look fully expanded shortly after unboxing, it may not feel fully expanded until the first 24 to 48 hours have passed.
There are a couple of different ways you can reach out to customer service if you have questions or you are unhappy with your purchase. You can send a message via their message system on their Contact Us page and await a response. Puffy customer service is said to be quick to respond to inquiries and concerns.
If you would rather speak with someone rather than sending a message, you are free to call between 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you need to talk to someone on the weekend, you can call between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Hours listed are PST.
There is a 101-night trial period that allows you to determine if the Puffy Mattress is right for you. If you decide that you are unhappy with your purchase, reach out to customer service to discuss returning the mattress for a full refund. If you decide to return the mattress, it will go through a donations process to either a local or national charity.
The mattress also comes with a lifetime warranty. Within the first ten years of owning your Puffy Mattress, the company will replace it for free if it experiences any material or craftsmanship issues. After the initial ten years, the company will either replace or repair the mattress for material or manufacturer defects.
There is also a Quick Sleep option that allows you to keep the original mattress and replace it with a new mattress at half the price. To receive coverage under the warranty, you must still own the mattress and you must use it on an appropriate base or frame. If you misuse or abuse the mattress, you void your warranty.

How It Compares
The Puffy Mattress seems to hold up rather well against the competition. Similar brands that often compete with the Puffy include Purple, Casper, and Ghostbed. When it comes to shipping and delivery, the Puffy and Purple are rather similar. However, the Puffy is not packaged until it is manufactured and ready to ship, which helps minimize off-gassing.
The Puffy offers a firmer feel in comparison to the Purple, though the difference in firmness is not that significant. Both mattresses focus on providing you the utmost comfort possible for varying sleep positions.
However, the fact that the Puffy is just slightly firmer does make it feel a bit more supportive, which is great for people who want lumbar support. It is also great for people who often sleep restless or wake up with an aching back.
Although both the Puffy and the Purple do a nice job of relieving pressure on different points of the body, it is the Puffy that seems to provide the most support. The Puffy seems to perform better than the Purple for back and side sleeping because of that added support.
Is Puffy Right For You?
The Puffy Mattress is ideal for back and side sleepers. Stomach sleepers may also find this bed comfortable, though the rating for stomach sleeping is just a bit under that of the rating for side and back sleeping.
This mattress is ideal for couples, too, particularly if one of you experiences sleep disruptions because the other one tosses and turns a lot. If you prefer a cool night’s sleep, the Puffy’s ingenious design will help you achieve a more restful night’s sleep.
I do not recommend this mattress for people who want a softer mattress to sleep on. Although the top layer is soft and cloud-like, the bottom layer is decently firm enough to offer support, which is something that you might not enjoy if you are used to a softer mattress. Otherwise, we certainly recommend that you give the Puffy a try to see if it is right for you.
