Butcher Box is a subscription service that provides fresh meats. The company was founded by Mike Salguero after he tried grass-fed cow for the first time. Not only did Salguero appreciate the meat’s taste, but he was thrilled about the health advantages grass-fed beef offered over grain-fed beef.
Salguero discovered that a mere 1% of the beef consumed in the United States is 100% grass-fed, and decided to do something about it. The company, which is located in Cambridge, MA just outside of Boston, now focuses on delivering grass-fed beef, heritage breed pork and organic chicken to their customers.
How Does It Work?
Butcher Box outlines how their service works on their website. Much like other subscription services, the process is straightforward.
Customers first register and choose the box that they’d like. Customers can choose from various boxes consisting of the three types of meat. If they’re not satisfied with any of the pre-chosen boxes, customers also have the option to customize their own box.
All of the meat is antibiotic and hormone-free. The company has committed to securing meats from farms that practice sustainability and who have committed to core values that include quality and animal welfare.
Salguero has stated on Butcher Box’s website that as a father of three, he wishes to provide them the highest quality and healthiest meat possible. He seeks to maintain this mindset when finding and delivering meats to customers. He only works with producers he can trust.
The company’s website also stresses the differences between grass-fed and grain-fed beef. Butcher Box states that 97% of beef for sale in the United States is processed in feedlots and fed with grain. These cattle are often fed antibiotics as well because of crowded conditions that promote the spread of disease. Even with new FDA guidelines, antibiotic-resistant superbugs are still a major concern.
Grass-fed beef is leaner than grain-fed beef. Compared to grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef contains less fat, three-times as many Omega 3’s, more CLA, and higher doses of vitamins.
After placing their order, customers simply wait for their meat to arrive at their front door. The meat is shipped in an insulated, frozen box packed with dry ice, ensuring that the meats stay fresh throughout the duration of the shipping process. The company states that their meat is frozen at peak freshness levels. After being frozen, the meats are then individually vacuum-sealed. Most meats arrive on a Friday.
The company has also committed to sustainability, and ships all of their orders in eco-friendly packaging. Butcher Box packaging materials are biodegradable and recyclable.
Plans & Pricing
Customers start by choosing a box. They can choose between a...
- Mixed Box
- Beef & Pork Box
- Beef & Chicken Box
- All Beef Box
- Custom Box
Customers then select which size they would like and the frequency they’d like deliveries to be made. All Butcher Box shipments are free. Below is a brief detailing of the options available on Butcher Box.
The Basic Box is available for $129 a box. It features approximately ten pounds of meat and comes with approximately 24 six-ounce servings. The Big Box is available for $238 a box. It features between 16-22 pounds of meat and comes with approximately 50 six-ounce servings.
Both boxes can be ordered monthly or bi-monthly. Butcher Box also allows customers to pause their subscription for up to three months.
After selecting their preferences, customers can choose from various add-ons. Butcher Box indicates that add-ons can be changed each month and are recurring. When we looked, the options available included:
- 10oz Uncured Sugar-Free Bacon, $7
- 1lb Breakfast Sausage, $9
- 2lb Ground Beef Brick, $15
No more than two of each add-on can be purchased.
A Custom Box is more expensive than a curated box. Custom Classic Boxes are $149, while Custom Big Boxes are $270. Additionally, custom boxes are not available for renewal. Meaning, customers cannot choose to have them delivered monthly or bi-monthly on a subscription basis. Instead, customers will have to order their custom box each month.
When ordering, customers select certain meats from different categories. They are prompted to choose three types of meat from one category, and then three additional types of meat from a premium category. Meats range from beef stew meat and party wings to top sirloin steak and NY Strip steak.
Generally, customers that provided Butcher Box reviews were very satisfied. Butcher Box reviews spoke highly of the meat’s taste, and customers appreciated that the meats were individually vacuum-sealed.
The only negative reviews that customers tended to provide was that there was a lot of meat in each order. Some indicated that it was difficult for them to store that much meat in their freezer, and wished that the company would provide a smaller shipment option that could be ordered more frequently.

Recipes Available At Butcher Box
Butcher Box offers an extensive recipe list on their website. Customers can search for recipes by the cut of meat, which is a convenient tool to help customers make the most of the meats in their box. Three of our favorites are below.
Butcher Box vs The Competition
Butcher Box is a hybrid between meal-subscription services and the dozens of steak-of-the-month clubs that can be found on the internet. They are the only company that provides such high-quality, grass-fed beef on a subscription basis.
Butcher Box lacks a bit compared to other meal-subscription services because they only provide meats and main courses. They do not provide side dishes or the ability for customers to make a meal in minutes. Additionally, many meal delivery services have options for weekly deliveries.
Butcher Box only delivers monthly but provides enough meat to last through the month. They also provide the means necessary for the meat to stay fresh during this time by vacuum sealing each cut of meat.
Butcher Box differs from steak-of-the month clubs because they offer their customers much more flexibility when choosing their meats. Customers can choose the type of meat they want. They also have the ability to create a custom box. Steak-of-the-month clubs simply send different, random cuts of meat to customers each month.
Is It Right For Me?
There’s no way around it - Butcher Box is for meat lovers. Vegetarians should steer clear of this subscription service. With that being said, those that appreciate quality meats will truly enjoy this service. Because they are of such high-quality, the meats can be especially beneficial for those who are health-conscious. Butcher Box can be great for those practicing the Paleo Diet.
The subscription service is also great for those who like to have a little bit of flexibility when making meals, and those who live life on-the-go. Other meal subscriptions often offer the whole meal with a slew of ingredients and specific instructions how the meal is to be made. Butcher Box, on the other hand, only provides meats. Customers still have the flexibility to make their own sides for their meals.
Because they are individually vacuum-sealed, Butcher Box meats are great for those who don’t have much time to prep for meals. It’s easy to take a cut of meat out of the freezer each morning and allow it to thaw so that it’s ready to be cooked by dinner time.
Butcher Box should only be considered by those with a bit of extra money to spend, or who wish to invest in their health. Butcher Box is very expensive, which makes sense because such high-quality meats are offered. The meats will also last for weeks at a time in the freezer. But, each box is a considerable investment.
