Founded in 1996, MyPoints began as an online survey tool that provided gift cards and incentives to its members for the sole purpose of taking part in online surveys. Since that time, it has grown to be a large player in the online affiliate program that now offers gift cards, cash and travel miles to its members for doing a lot more than taking surveys for money.

While you can still take surveys, you can also earn points for reading emails, signing up for offers, doing online shopping through their affiliate links. You can also earn rewards for watching short videos, playing games and even browsing the internet.

Pros

  • Easy rewards program to sign up and use.
  • A wide variety of tasks to earn rewards points.
  • Points can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, travel miles or even online shopping.

Cons

  • Low earnings per task mean you have to do a lot of tasks.
  • Little to no customer service.
  • exclamation-triangle
New platform overhaul is difficult and cumbersome.

Cashback: The Best Way To Save Money

With over 1800 affiliates earning cash is pretty easy for doing something you already do anyway: shopping. We all have something we need to buy, clothes, groceries, school supplies. With MyPoints, you can shop for these things online and still earn cash back!

Cashback shopping is arguably the easiest and least time-consuming method of using MyPoints. Instead of sitting through a video or taking survey after survey, you simply find an online outlet you want to shop at, find the coupon link on the MyPoints site and go shopping.

Once your purchases have been approved the affiliate will send their kickback to MyPoints, who will give you points for those purchases. Once you have accumulated enough points, you can then cash them out and have money deposited into your PayPal account within five days.

You also have the other cash out opportunities as well, such as browsing for gift cards to your favorite stores, adding points to your travel miles or getting another chance to go shopping without spending any of your money.

This process works similar to Ebates, where you will use affiliate links to go through the MyPoints website to the vendor site where you do your shopping. As long as the items you buy qualify through the MyPoint system; you will earn points to cash in.

Other Ways to Earn Points

MyPoints has more ways to earn points than virtually any other affiliate site on the internet. Here are the different ways you can earn points:

Watch Videos

You can watch videos to earn points. You have a cap limit of 500 points per day earned by watching videos. Most of the videos are about 1 to 3 minutes long and will earn you a point each. They also have playlist videos that run about 20 to 30 minutes and will earn you 12 to 15 points per playlist.

Score

Score is the MyPoints browser add-on that gives you a toolbar for web searching and alerting you to points you can earn when you visit an affiliate site without going through the MyPoints website first.

You will earn points just by downloading the browser add-on and more as you use it.

Online Surveys

Once you create your MyPoints account and set up your portfolio, surveys will be sent to you to take. Based on your profile answers, you will qualify for certain surveys. Being a female, or over 30 years old, for example, are ways you qualify for these surveys. The more you fill out your profile, the more surveys you will qualify for.

You take the surveys and points are awarded to you for completing them.  These points can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, and travel miles.

Discover Deals

Discover Deals is MyPoints incentive program to try out new things. You can join book clubs, Try new products or even purchase new items that are fresh on the market. Depending on the cost of the item or product, you will earn points that you can then cash in later.

For example, if you have ever wanted to try the online video game rental site GameFly, you can do so through Discover Deals, and earn points for cash back. It is a great way to try something new, or something you were planning on doing anyway while saving money and earning points.

Play Games

Just like watching videos, you can also earn points by playing video games. You will play the game and be asked to provide feedback on it. When you have completed the feedback, points will be credited to your account.

Print Coupons

You can also look through the MyPoints website coupon directory for coupons of products you buy on a regular basis. If you select a coupon from the site and print it out, you will receive points for doing so. Most coupons will give you 1 to 2 points each.

Buy E-Gift Cards

If you plan to buy gift cards for the holidays or birthdays, doing so through the MyPoints website will earn you points as well. You simply go through your account on the MyPoints site and browse the selection of e-gift cards and make your purchase. Once completed, points will be credited to your account.

nCrave

Another way to earn points watching videos is through nCrave. This is a playlist style list of videos that you can watch in your browser or on your mobile to earn 3 to 21 points. In general, these videos will be about new products, advertisements and incentive programs that are designed to grab your attention. Watching videos through the nCrave playlist is a simple way to earn more points for your MyPoints account.

Special Offers

Bonus points and new ways to earn points crop up on a nearly daily basis on the MyPoints website. You can view the daily deals, surveys, videos, and games as well as online shopping deals that will provide larger savings and higher points accumulated.

Checking out the specials on a daily basis is a good way to rack up more points than normal while doing the same things.

How Much Are Points Worth?

You aren’t going to get rich by using MyPoints. This isn’t designed to be a work from home solution or to act as a part-time job. The points have a relatively low cash value, and you will need to accumulate quite a few before you are at the cash out threshold.

In general, the points are worth $0.0035 each. That is less than one cent per point. The minimum cash out allowance threshold for turning your points into cash and having them deposited into your PayPal account is $25. This means to cash out $25 you will need to accumulate 4550 points.

The better option for this is to keep your points and keep an eye on the gift cards. Gift cards will be discounted from time to time, meaning the $25 Best Buy gift card that normally costs 3000 points could drop to only cost 1800 points. The best bang for your point-buck is on the gift cards, especially when they get discounted.

Payment Options

As discussed earlier, you have several payment options for the MyPoints rewards. PayPal is the option for you if you are looking for cash. You must fist accumulate $25 worth of points before MyPoints will send you cash through PayPal.

There are strategies for using MyPoints rewards cash out options and one the best is through the gift cards. MyPoints will often discount the cost of the gift cards. You can get the same amount on the gift card for fewer points.

Hoarding points may seem like a good idea, but using your points will allow you to take advantage of better deals when they come up. You shouldn’t hoard your points and instead use them frequently to get the best deals.

MyPoints Vs. The Competition

The biggest competitor to MyPoints is Swagbucks. Swagbucks is also a point based survey taking platform that offers many of the same benefits of MyPoints.

Swagbucks has better reviews in most cases than MyPoints as far as functionality goes. However, they don’t have as many rewards to offer.

MyPoints still holds the advantage with cashout options and payment schedules.

Customer Reviews

People always have things to say, both good and bad and you can find many unbiased reviews of MyPoints online. Most of the reviews are mediocre, and you won’t find very many with high marks.

However, this doesn’t mean the MyPoints is a bad service. It is legitimate and will work well for you as long as you keep in mind that this is not a money-making venture. People going into the program with the mindset of using it as a part-time job will be disappointed. This is the reason for some of the lower marked reviews.

Most of the valid complaints come from the functionality of the site. Surveys have been reported to freeze up and shut down before they can be completed. This doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.

If a survey does lock up on you, rarely will you get the opportunity to retake it and you won’t receive points for incomplete surveys, even if it isn’t your fault.

MyPoints Hacks

The best way to take advantage of MyPoints is to look for gift card deals and cash in your points as soon as possible. To get the most amount of points you want to be able to schedule the amount of time spent on the site doing the various tasks.

The best method is to seek out the higher paying options and get them out of the way first thing. Most of these will be watching videos and nCrave playlists. You can accumulate a good amount of points in just a couple of hours.

You want to avoid burn out and stick to your schedule, or you will find yourself there most of the day and end up with little to show for it. Plan a time period each day and stick with it, earning similar amounts per day and your Points balance will go up before you know it.

The Deal Meisters’ Tip

To get the most out of your time with MyPoints, stick to the videos. You can do one or two surveys per day, but you will get more points with less effort by watching the videos. When you do online shopping, stop into MyPoints first and see if your store is running any specials through them. You will save money and earn points for something you were going to do anyway.

Is It Right For Me?

MyPoints isn’t for everyone. However, if you have a couple of hours to devote each day to read emails, take surveys and watch videos (which you probably already do), joining MyPoints is a good way to get rewarded for your time and efforts. Is MyPoints safe? Absolutely. They are a legitimate site with actual rewards you can use.

Deals and Coupons

Signing up with MyPoints is free and simple. You can also get a sign on bonuses and first-time bonus points when you do. You can even snag a welcome deal where you take your first five surveys, and instead of earning points they will give you $5. This may not sound like a lot up front, but when you realize those same five surveys would only net you a few hundred points, it’s a great sign up incentive.

Review Summary

MyPoints isn’t going to allow you to quit your day job. However, a few hours on the weekend and a couple videos and surveys after dinner each night will result in some great deals in gift cards or travel miles. You can then turn around and use those for date night or holiday shopping. Is MyPoints legit? It absolutely is, and if you want to earn free rewards, there isn’t a much better method to do so.
