Purple Carrot is an at-home meal delivery service that caters to those looking for plant-based recipes. They focus on providing meals to “Balanceatarians,” the company’s self-coined phrase for someone who eats plant-based meals at least a couple of times a week. The company has recently partnered with TB12 Performance, the lifestyle brand created by Tom Brady.

Brady, who has won five Super Bowls as quarterback of the New England Patriots and is a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer when he retires, is still playing in the NFL today at age 40. The meals provided by Purple Carrot are the same ones eaten by Brady. Purple Carrot has said that the meals have either been enjoyed by Brady in the past, or reflect the nutritional guidelines that make up his highly-structured diet.

How Does It Work?

Purple Carrot provides a step-by-step guide explaining how their delivery service works.

Customers begin by choosing one of three meal plans, choosing from

  • 1-2 Person, with three unique meals per week
  • 3-4 Person, with two unique meals per week
  • TB12 Performance meals, with three high-performance meals per week

Customers can then browse menus to see what will be in the box that week and decide if they would like to place that order. Purple Carrot predetermines which meals are sent each week, and customers are limited to those options for the week.

Generally, we view this as a negative aspect. Other meal-delivery services allow you to select from a few options. This ensures you get meals you’re happy with and increases the likelihood you order again. If you’re ordering from a meal delivery service, you’re likely doing so because of convenience.

If you log onto Purple Carrot and notice they’re serving a meal you don’t like, you’ll likely skip that week’s meal and need to buy groceries. With that being said, some customers may find it inconvenient to select meals each week and would prefer Purple Carrot’s system where new meals are on your doorstep without having to think about it.

Customers receive a weekly box, which contains fresh ingredients required to make the included meals. Boxes are shipped in sustainable packaging. Purple Carrot meals can typically be made in less than an hour. The meals can sometimes be intricate to make. Although they’re not overly difficult, it may require the use of multiple dishes, utensils, or appliances.

Purple Carrot attempts to teach you how to cook and eat healthily. The company provides recipe cards for each meal. Each card features step-by-step instructions and clear, full-color photos.

A Plant-Based Diet

In explaining the importance of a plant-based diet, Purple Carrot states that plant-based eating has been proven to improve or reduce chronic disease. In fact, it’s the only diet that’s been scientifically proven to do so. The company provides statistics about the risks associated with excess red meat consumption.

Those who regularly eat red meets increase their risk of

  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Certain Cancers
  • Earlier Death

Meanwhile, plant-based eating can decrease the risk of high blood pressure by 55%, decrease the risk of heart disease by 32%, and decrease the risk of diabetes by 78%. The company takes advantage of the more than 20,000 edible plants that exist throughout the world to bring you new flavors in your meals.

Plant-based diets are also beneficial for those who are environmentally-conscious. Purple Carrot says 320 miles in carbon emissions are saved by eating one less burger a week. They also say that it only takes 39 gallons of water to produce one pound of vegetables, while it takes 1850 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef.

  • Learn to cook a number of different meals
  • Plant-based diets can be beneficial for your health
  • Company customer service is fast, responsive and friendly

  • No choices for meals
  • Expensive

Plans & Pricing

As mentioned, there are three different plans to choose from at Purple Carrot. Free shipping is provided with all meal plans. Customers can skip or cancel their orders at any time. The company does not have a mandatory subscription length.

To skip a shipment, customers can click on the “Upcoming Menus” tab in their Account Settings. Customers looking to skip an order for the following week must do so before 11:59PM EST the Tuesday night prior to the week they’re looking to skip.

The three packages that are available are highlighted below.

1-2 Person

This package provides three unique meals per week for $72, which breaks down to $12 a plate. The company states that if ordering for one, there will likely be enough food for leftovers the next day. So, if you’re ordering for yourself, this plan could actually result in five to six meals.

3-4 Person

This package provides two unique meals per week for $80, which breaks down to $10 a plate. This package is currently unavailable, although the company says that it will return later this year.

TB12 Performance Meals

This package provides three unique meals per week for $78, which breaks down to $13 a week. These recipes are higher in protein and gluten-free. Purple Carrot has designed these meals for individuals who are more active and have a higher metabolism. The meals are also limited in soy and refined sugars.

Those who regularly subscribe to the TB12 Performance Meals also gain access to exclusive content while qualifying for various giveaways, such as merchandise and game memorabilia.

Customer Reviews

Recipes Available At Purple Carrot

Purple Carrot provides a number of recipes on their website. Each recipe contains basic nutrition facts, ingredients, and cooking instructions. Below are three of our favorites.

Purple Carrot vs The Competition

Purple Carrot is similar to other meal-delivery subscription services like Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, and Plated. However, they are different in the fact that they offer plant-based meals. Purple Carrot is the only meal-delivery company that focuses on delivering plant-based dinners.

Because they only use vegetables, the boxes are not labeled as perishable. Other meal subscription services must ship their products on ice, which can melt on a hot day. It’s a little thing, but with Purple Carrot, you don’t have to worry about rushing home from work to put your box in the refrigerator.

There are three things that set Purple Carrot behind their competition, however. One is cost. Meal subscriptions can be pricey, but Purple Carrot is definitely on the pricier end. Organic and fresh foods are often more expensive in the grocery store, so it makes sense that these meals would be more expensive as well. But on a per-plate cost, Purple Carrot can cost nearly 50% more.

Second is the lack of meal options. Many meal delivery services allow you to choose from a couple of meals each week, crafting a box that’s perfect for you and your family. You do not get this option with Purple Carrot. If you don’t like a meal for that week, you are stuck eating it, throwing it away, or canceling your whole box.

Lastly, the cook times for Purple Carrot are much longer than with other services. Other services have meals ready in about thirty minutes. Purple Carrot claims their meals take about 45 minutes to cook, but customers have indicated they take nearly an hour.

Is It Right For Me?

If you’re looking for the convenience of a plant-based diet without having to shop for a number of ingredients at the grocery store, Purple Carrot could be right for you.

Review Summary/Overview

Purple Carrot sets themselves apart delivering meals for vegans and others who don’t eat meat. Their partnership with TB12 is also a unique feature that should continue to see growth. However, the lack of flexibility and the cost of their meals sets Purple Carrot back.

  1. I was a little skeptical at first after reading a lot of bad reviews for Purple Carrot, but I thought I’d give them a try anyway. My first shipment was great and arrived on time. I love trying new recipes and these have been really wonderful.

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Hazel! I’m glad you decided to give Purple Carrot a try and had a great experience.

  2. I really think purple carrot has some delicious recipes and I was really looking forward to trying out many of them. After my last shipment was missing key ingredients I decided to cancel my subscription. Although they did refund me for the items, I just think they really need to try harder to make sure everything is packed properly.

    1. Thanks, Brenda for your feedback! I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I’m glad they refunded you without any issues. I myself think their recipes looked really good too.
