What Is the VITAL Card and How Does It Work?

The VITAL Card is a credit card that works in the same way that other credit cards work. You sign up for the card, get a quick credit check, then once you’re approved, you can purchase whatever you want within your credit limit and pay monthly.

That’s where the similarities between the VITAL Card and other credit cards end, though. With the VITAL Card, you’ll get cash rewards for each friend that you refer. These cash rewards continue for the entire duration of your relationship with VITAL, so long as your referral continues using the card and spending each month.

The more people you refer who sign up for the VITAL Card, the higher your VITAL Score will grow.

Your VITAL Score

Your VITAL Score is the way that the VITAL Card keeps track of how many people you’ve referred and determines how much cash you get at the end of the month from the pool of money.

Each friend that you get to sign up for the VITAL Card, you’ll earn four VITAL points. For each friend your friend refers, you’ll get two points, and then one point for every person they refer.

If you refer a couple of your friends and each of them refers a couple of people who then refer another couple of people, your VITAL score will skyrocket, and your monthly payout will increase.

With two first degree referrals, four second degree referrals, and eight third degree referrals, you’ll have 24 VITAL points and be well on your way to getting a nice cash package at the end of each month.

Earnings and Payout Structure

The VITAL Card is unique because of its earnings structure, which is:

  • You make 1% cash back on your purchases
  • For every purchase you make, 1% of the purchase’s value is added to the cash pool which is divvied up at the end of the month according to everyone’s VITAL score
  • For every purchase your referrals and all VITAL Card users make, the monthly pool grows and having a higher VITAL score pays more

It can be a bit hard to visualize exactly how much money you’ll make with your VITAL Card because you might not have a good idea for how much each referral could be worth with a VITAL score that you could easily reach by referring a couple of people.

Check out this table which describes the earnings that you’re projected to make for each referral that you make to your friends.

While we can’t guarantee that you’ll earn exactly this much money, we think that our estimates are pretty good if there are 100,000 other VITAL Card users who put their monthly expenditures of $1,500 onto the card.

Public Perception

There’s a lot of excitement built up about the VITAL Card already. Everyone ranging from students getting their first credit card to marketing professionals is eager to get started with the card and make referrals early so that they will have a good cash flow once the card launches.

The early VITAL card reviews—even before launch—are extremely positive. In many of the VITAL credit card reviews, people are mentioning that they’ve already recruited a bunch of their friends and family in anticipation of the card’s launch. You can join the ranks of these people if you want—just get ready to hustle.

Be sure to sound off about what you think about the VITAL Card in the comments section at the bottom of this post—we’ll be listening to what you say and making adjustments to our card’s strategy and terms accordingly.

How It Compares

Other cards with one-time referral fees are structured a bit differently than the VITAL Card. The VITAL card is better in a direct comparison of the money you earn in most cases.

For instance, the Discover card’s referral program offers $50 cash back or 5,000 airline miles, up to 100 friends a year. There aren’t any bonuses for you if your friends refer people, and your referrals aren’t linked to the amount that your friends spend. Your earnings are capped.

Likewise, the NetSpend cards, intended for building credit, have an even less generous referral program. For each friend that you refer to NetSpend, you get only $20 in credit added to the maximum on your account’s credit line after they purchase over $40.

The Chase Freedom card seems like it is a bit more generous than these two, offering $100 per referral up to $500. It turns out that the Discover card has a higher earnings cap of $1000 compared to the Chase card’s $500. Once again, your earnings hit the cap either way.

VITAL Vs. AMEX

AMEX is the biggest player in the cash back credit cards business, so it warrants special comparison with the VITAL Card.

First, AMEX cards often have a yearly fee, which can be as much as $200. Second, AMEX offers high cash back—up to %3-- but no referral bonuses.

If you have a lot of friends, you can probably make more money using the VITAL Card than you can with even the best AMEX card.

VITAL Card FAQs

Q: What are the rules about cash rewards?

A: You’ll earn cash rewards with your VITAL Card so long as you spend a minimum of $250 each month. If you put all your purchases on the VITAL Card, you won’t have any issues meeting the minimum, and the shared pool will be larger, meaning you’ll get more money back.

Q: Do I have to pay annually to keep using my VITAL Card?

A: Nope, there’s no annual fee for the VITAL Card in contrast with many of the other cash back credit cards out there.

Q: How often can I expect to be paid the proceeds from my VITAL Card?

A: Each month you’ll get your slice of the money pool as well as all of the cash back money that you’re owed. The same is true for anyone you refer.

Q: Can I sign up for a VITAL Card outside of the US?

A: Not yet. Vital is trying their best to make the VITAL Card launch in the US as seamless as possible, so they're holding back on deploying the VITAL Card elsewhere for now.

Q: Is there anything different between getting paid referral cash and getting paid cash back?

A:  There’s a big difference. Cash rewards are based on how many people you and your friends and your friends of friends have referred. The more people who you refer, the more you’ll make. Cashback is based on your monthly spending rather than how many people you refer or how much they spend. The only confusing point is that you’ll make larger cash rewards if your referrals spend more because they’ll be contributing more to the monthly shared pool which everyone gets a slice of at the end of each month.

I’m pretty excited for the launch too! Thanks for the informative review. I didn’t realize there were qualifications that need to be met to earn referral bonuses each month so that was helpful. Thanks!
